The pearl of the Dolomite Lakes
The Braies Lake (Lago di Braies in Italian) is a crystal-clear, blue-green sparkling mountain lake in the Braies valley in the South Tyrolean Dolomites, whose magnificent backdrop forms the imposing north face of the Great Seekofel. The idyllic lake is situated a few kilometers south of the Alta Pusteria valley between Brunico and Dobbiaco at an altitude of 1,494 meters. As part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, Lago di Braies is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and a protected natural monument. It is considered to be the most beautiful mountain lake in the Dolomites and is therefore also known as the “Pearl of the Dolomite Lakes”.
Mythical mountain lake
Lago di Braies is surrounded by mysterious legends from the national epic of the Ladin people. They tell of a kingdom far in the past, the empire of the Fanes, of princes and princesses and their alliances with the people of the marmots. The gate to the underworld of the Fanes Empire was once said to have been located at the southern end of the lake, which is why this part of the lake is called “Sass dia Porta” (Torberg) in Ladin.
A world-famous travel destination in the South Tyrolean Dolomites
Today, Lago di Braies is a popular destination for all ages and one of the most visited lakes in South Tyrol. It achieved worldwide fame as the location for the successful Italian series “Un passo dal cielo” with the Italian-American actor Terence Hill.
